The T4C Project

Measuring carbon and water footprints is now a central pillar of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations constitute the universally accepted framework for linking economic development, social justice and environmental protection.
Internationally, tourism businesses, which in addition to hotels, villas and rooms for rent, also include 22 other sectors of activity, currently have limited action in monitoring their ecological footprint. However, as climate change progresses rapidly, natural resources are depleted and geopolitical developments exponentially increase the cost of operation and maintenance, the need for tourism businesses to monitor and control their carbon footprint and water footprint becomes urgent, while governments are gradually being led to institutionalize their calculation.
The T4C project concerns the development of an innovative digital application based on practices for recording conditions and parameters of tourism businesses that are responsible for climate change [recording and recording the carbon footprint (CF) and water footprint (WF) which are integral parts of the overall ecological footprint]. The analysis of the conditions and parameters will contribute to decision-making by tourism businesses to improve their adaptation to new conditions and strengthen their resilience.
The medium-term objectives of the project are:
1) The inclusion of as many businesses as possible internationally, starting with the tourism sector, which is one of the main sectors of the economy of Western civilization, and Greece, which is a global tourist destination, in a process of regular carbon and water footprint calculation.
2) The reduction of pollution and consumption of natural resources in areas with tourist traffic with the aim of contributing to the fight against climate change.
3) Raising public awareness at an international level (businesses, organizations and citizens) about the possibility of everyone contributing to the protection of cities, the countryside and the planet as a whole.
Through the use of the application, each tourism business will be able to calculate its ecological footprint using valid scientific methods, monitor its evolution over time, have access to a large knowledge base regarding the results of its measurements, and communicate its achievements to its clientele and the general public in the context of green reward labels that will be awarded to it.
